Video Gait Analysis

The Kinetic Chain…

The Kinetic Chain is the concept that all the motion in your entire body is connected. Rotation or movement at any joint effects all the other joints along the entire chain. Abnormal motion in the foot can lead to motion in the ankle, hips, knees, and/or back just as abnormal motion at the hips can cause issues at any of the joints below in the leg.

Gait…

You gait is the way you walk, run, and move . There are many types of normal and abnormal gaits with many different parts involved. There are many moving pieces involved! There are 4 Bones in the leg and 26 bones in the foot. In just the foot there are 33 joints and over 100 ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Lower extremity motions are complex and interconnected. When evaluating an injury it is important to look at the connection between all of the joint motions not just the injured area.

Video Gait Analysis…

The Glenside office ONLY we will start offering Video Gait Analysis on Thursday Afternoons.

First we will perform a Biomechanical Assessment, checking your joint motion, flexibility, strength, balance, and leg length.

Then we will have you walk and/or run with and without shoes while filming you using a tablet with a motion capture App that will allow us to move through your motion frame by frame and measure angles.

We will put all this information together to form a plan to help diagnose, treat, and/or prevent walking and running injuries.

Preparing for your visit…

  • Bring your current walking or running shoes

  • If you wear any orthotic inserts bring them with you

  • Please wear fitness clothing, shorts preferred

  • Don’t worry about long distance cardio, you will only be walking/running for between 5-10 minutes

    • If you can’t walk continuously for greater than 5 minutes or if walking/running causes a painful limp than you are not a good candidate for video gait analysis at this time
